The growing impacts of heatwaves and low levels of inclusion of Heat Health Action Plans with national policies emphasize the urgent need to address spatial heat vulnerability and build urban heat resilience into implementable action plans.

Dr Kotharkar is a member of an expert committee constituted by the National Disaster Management Authority of India, reviewing heatwave preparedness guidelines in the country. She is also an ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code) trainer, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, India. For the last 25 years, she has conducted detailed research in “Urban Sustainability, Climate resilient cities, Impact of heat waves on cities and human health and Local Climate Zone based approach to urban planning”.
